It all began when I graduated from A&P school. It was 2009, in Des Moines, IA, where I grew up, the opportunities for aircraft mechanics were scarce. For many months, I struggled to find my first job as a newly licensed A&P and for the first time in my life, I packed up my bags and left everything familiar behind—heading to Ft. Rucker, AL, for a job maintaining Bell 206s and UH-60 helicopters.
This was my first real mechanic job, and for a while, things were good. I was making decent money, and I even started to form a few connections. But not long after, a feeling of being just another cog in the machine started to set in. I began to feel invisible, like my work and my contribution didn’t really matter.
On top of that, I was over a thousand miles away from home. The distance from family and friends weighed on me, and I found myself feeling more and more isolated. Ever been there? That feeling of emptiness, like you’re giving everything and getting nothing back? I reached a breaking point, and I knew something had to change. Are you feeling the same way?
I wanted to have the freedom to live where I wanted, but there weren’t many mechanic jobs that pay well in my hometown. We’re not a big aviation state. I didn’t want to feel like a number anymore either and I wanted to make top notch pay. I thought and thought about how I could do this….
So, I took matters into my own hands. I started mapping out my future and deciding right then and there that I was going to create a life where I could make exceptional money and choose where I wanted to work. That’s when I decided to start my own aircraft maintenance business. That was the start of a wild ride, full of major challenges and hard lessons, but I had my AH HA moment and I could see a way out!
Sure I knew that owning a business would come with some perks, but I didn’t know that it would also come with many hidden benefits:
I learned how to use my company to financially support my aviation hobby and best of all it’s 100% legal! 👍
Listen, I’m not a social butterfly, but owning an aircraft maintenance business allowed me to be comfortable in my own skin. This allowed me to meet so many more inspiring people. From customers to fellow employees, my social network blew up!
Believe it or not, I actually got in better shape! This is because I wanted to get up in the morning and get after the day instead of dragging myself out of bed each morning.
Life is all about the journey. So far, my journey has been action packed! I’m looking forward to what’s ahead, but now…
